Note: Summary data for the Spring 2016 season has been moved to the bottom of this page. Summary and full data for the Fall 2016 season is located directly below data for the Spring 2017 season.

The Miami Spring 2017 Season began on January 1, 2017. However, there is an overlap in the statistics pages and as of Jan. 4, players statistics had not yet been re-started to reflect the new season. So we have to subtract the Dec. 31, 2016 player statistics from the Jan. 4 statistics in order to calculate the new season's statistics. My computer skills are not up to that task and so we will have to wait a little while. Maimi Jai Alai did the same thing with their statistics last season. The statistics weren't reset to reflect new season cumulative numbers until July 11 (see below), 10 days after the season began. Why it takes Miami Jai Alai so long to reset the cumulative statistics to reflect the new season is unknown. It is as if Major League Baseball added 2016 season standings and statistics to the new 2017 results for the first 10 days of the new season before re-setting. Granted, Miami Jai Alai has only 24 hours to reset... but this is the age of computers after all. It is also possible that I am missing some technical issue that causes this annoying delay. I would very much like to know what that might be.

Note: Miami Jai Alai re-calibrated its roster statistics to the new season on January 5, 2017. (added January 13, 2017).

That said, the weekly leaders are still the weekly leaders. In this case (December 28, 2016-Jan. 2, 2017) the week crosses two seasons. But let's ignore that and set the weekly leaders to the day the week ends, making Jan. 2 the first week of the new season.

For the week ending April 17, 2017

Miami Player Pages (for April 17, 2017). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

Parity reigned supreme at Miami Jai Alai this week. Three players (Angel, Sierra II, and Zinkunegi) shared  the weekly wins lead with 9. Four players (Benat, Ladutxe, Jabi, and Ricky) had 8. 10 players had 5 or more wins. Sierra II led the in the money finishes with 24. Benat was 2nd with 21. We will look at Zinkunegi's week because he had the highest winning percentage. Zinkunegi won largely through his efforts in his final 2 peformances, which netted him 5 of his 9 wins. If he was a baseball batter, his line would look like this.

For the week ending April 10, 2017

Miami Player Pages (for April 10, 2017). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

Aizarna broke Aritz' 8 week streak of most wins (or tied for most wins). Aizarna had 11. Aritz was second with 10. 13 players had 5 or more wins. Aritz led the in the money finishes with 21. Luis was second with 20.  According to Tiger's weekly compilation comment, this was Aizarna's first leading winner week in over 5 years. He accomplished the feat by having two very big days (4/5 and 4/9) with 4 wins. Aizarna had a very heavy workload, not only for the whole week (40 games), but within performances (9 games on 4/7 and 4/9). The battle for the wins lead was very exciting this week. Though these two players don't usually play head to head, they did several times. Curiously, Aritz got the better of most of those head to head meetings, but not enough extra wins to get past Aizarna. It came down to the 4/10 performance, with Aizarna having his games early and Aritz having his games late. Aizarna won once to increase his lead to 11-8. Aritz needed 3 wins to tie for the lead and 4 to win outright. During his 8 week run (see below) Aritz won 3 or more games in a performance 19 times. This time he could only manage 2. He needed a win in Game 10 or 11 to keep his hopes alive, but was shut out in both. His win in Game 12 got him to within 1, but it was all over by then.

We are particularly lucky, due to the efforts of one of the fans who attended the performance, to have full match video of  Game 4, a 9 point doubles game, on 4/9. Both Aritz (Post 8) and Aizarna (Post 6) played in this game and they played one point against each other. Later, Aritz dropped a simple catch (7:36--7:42 on the video), the kind of error caused by inevitable lapses in concentration when one grinds out 700-800 games in a 6 month season. At that point in the game, his team had 3 points in the second round. 2 points were lost. Might his team have won had he not dropped that catch? No one knows. But we do know he hasn't been making many of those kind of errors. And if his team had won that game (they ended up 2nd), Aritz might have a 9 week streak with most wins. The Quiniela form harshly punishes errors.

That said, Aizarna had a very good week. If he was a baseball batter his line would look like this:

Games-W-P-S

5-1-1-1
9-1-0-0
6-0-1-1
9-4-1-1

For more context on Aritz, along with a link to condensed match video of his perfect game win in Game 2 with Ubilla on Apr. 2 (also linked to below in the game by game table) see the blog post: A Glimpse of Aritz.

For the 8th consecutive week Aritz either led or tied for the lead in wins. He won 12 games. Manuel and Jon were 2nd with 9. 8 players had 5 or more wins. Aritz tied with Manuel for most in the money finishes with 21. Ricky was 2nd with 18. Aritz had a much smaller work week (32 games as opposed to 39 and 46 the last two weeks) but his winning percentage was down for the week nonetheless. It was under .400 for the first time since the week ending March 13. He is on a new performance streak, equaling his last one as of the time of this posting (Apr. 6) with 24 consecutive performances with at least 1 win. Since Feb. 8 he has had a win in 48 of his last 49 performances. At the end of the Apr. 3 week, his overall lead in games won was 80 over 2nd place Ricky and Laduxte. He had 164 wins and a season winning percentage of .355. Laduxte and Cisneros were 2nd at .188. If Aritz was a baseball hitter his line would look like this:

For the week ending March 27, 2017

Miami Player Pages (for March 27, 2017). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

For the 7th consecutive week, Aritz either led or tied for the lead in wins. This week he won 17, 8 more than second place Ricky. 12 players had 5 or more wins. Aritz also led the in the money finishes with 29, 9 more than Jabi, Rekalde, and Aldazabal. Aritz, as of Mar. 27, had 152 wins, 73 more than 2nd place Cisneros. This week upped Aritz' winning percentage from .345 to .353. As the Spring season reaches it's halfway point, Aritz is on a pace for 300 victories. Of course, no one expects that to happen, but it gives an idea of the magnitude of the season he is having. His latest performance streak, as of this post on Mar. 29, is 17 consecutive performances with at least one win. His multiple win performance streak was stopped at 11 on Mar. 24. Since Feb. 8, he has won at least one game in 41 of his last 42 performances. If Aritz was a baseball player his line would look like this:

6-3-1-1
6-1-0-3
8-3-1-1
5-2-2-1
7-3-1-0

His posts were unbalanced this week, with a small excess of advantageous positions. He took advantage of this.

For the week ending March 20, 2017

Miami Player Pages (for March 20, 2017). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

Aritz blew the roof off Miami Jai Alai with the most successful week of any player at either Dania or Miami since I have been doing these reports. He won 19 games, 8 more than his closest competitor, Jabi. 9 players had 5 or more wins. Aritz also had 15 more in the money finishes (35) than his closest competitors, Jabi and Ricky. Aritz' .413 winning percentage for the week improved his winning percentage for the season from .336 to .345. To put that percentage into context, the second highest winning percentage on the roster (as of March 20) was Cisneros' .193. After having his streak of 24 performances with at least 1 win and 16 performances with multiple wins snapped on March 9, he immediately began a new streak in both categories, which this week has played a major role in growing.  On March 10 (see below for week ending March 13) he won one game. Every performance since then he has won multiple games. As this post is released, on March 23, he has won at least 1 game in 12 consecutive performances (March 9-23). He has won multiple games in 11 consecutive performances beginning March 10. Since February 8, he has had at least 1 win in 36 of his last 37 performances. Since Februrary 17, he has had multiple wins in 27 of 29 performances. As of March 23, he has 143 wins, which opens the real possibility of 250 wins for the season. The last 4 seasons' leading winners have been Aritz (214), Irastorza (205), Aritz (192) and Lopez (170).

Aritz had a brutal schedule this week. tying with for most games played with 46. He played 9 games in one performance, 8 games in four, and 5 games in one. If Aritz was a baseball hitter, here is what his line would look like

Games-W-P-S

8-3-4-0
8-5-1-0
9-3-3-2
5-2-1-1
8-2-1-1
8-4-0-2

46-19-10-6

He was a bit top-heavy with advantageous post positions, but if you look at his P7-8 (or P6-8) record, you will see that he actually had a better winning percentage there than he did in the better post positions.

G-W-P-S-X (out of the money)

P1-3: 20-7-3-3-7
P4-6: 14-6-4-2-2

P6:      6-2-2-0-2

P7-8:  6-4-1-1-0

46-19-10-6-11

Some might say, "no Lopez, no Goikoetxea, no Irastorza," but I don't buy that argument. Since January, Aritz has had 3 major performance streaks (14, 24, and now 11), which shows he is beating everybody with any partner from any post position. And this week, with a a very big workload, he simply won more games. Quiniela Jai Alai is a very capricious sport. The smallest mistake or lack of concentration can easily take you out of the game. You have to play great Jai Alai, no matter what the circumstances in order to win like this. You also have to capitalize on a lot of possible game points to make them into game points. Anyone who has watched the sport for any length of time knows how difficult it is to produce these numbers against a professional roster. Aritz is a great Quiniela player who is having a monster season.

Aritz won with 8 partners. He won the G12 singles game 5 times in 6 tries. He was not out of the money more than 2 consecutive times all week.

Here is Aritz' week.

For the week ending March 13, 2017

Miami Player Pages (for March 13, 2017). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

Aritz, for the 5th consecutive week, either led or tied for the lead in wins. This week he had 10. Jon was second with 9. 11 players had 5 wins or more. Aritz also led the in the money finishes with 21. One of the Sierra's (it is unclear which one) was second with 19. Though Aritz' win output was down 1/3 from each of his last 3 weeks, he actually increased his lead in wins from 39 to 47 over the 2nd place leading winner on the roster, Cisneros, who had a poor week. Aritz' season winning percentage declined from .343 to .336 and his ITM percentage declined slightly from .625 to.620 last week.

However, the big story of the week was the snapping of Aritz' performance streak with at least 1 win at 24, and with multiple wins at 16. This happened on March 9, when he was held to a place and a show in 7 games. When he was out of the money in G4 of the 3/8 performance, it stopped a streak of 18 consecutive games in the money. The story of the end of the streak is told in a blog post released last week. Though he played 36 games this week, he opened the week with 7 starts in each of the first 2 performances. Half of his performances contained 7 starts. On 3/9, when the performance streak was snapped, he had 2 starts in P8, 2 in P7, 1in P6, 1 in P4, and 1 in P1. He was out of the money in the last 5 starts that day (P8,7,7,8,1) and followed that up with 3 more out of the money starts on 3/10 before he broke that small streak in futility with a win. As of the time of this post (3/15) he has a 5 performance streak of at least 1 win going. Earlier in the year, from January 11-26 (scroll down and see below), he had a 14 performance streak with at least 1 win. If Aritz was a baseball hitter here is what his line for the week would look like:

Games-W-P-S

7-2-1-0
7-0-1-1
5-1-0-1
7-3-2-1
5-2-0-1
5-2-1-2

36-10-5-6

Though he had only 9 starts in P7-8 for the week, 5 of them came on the first two days of the week, when all the streaks were snapped. In the three weeks before this one (15 wins each week) he was phenomenal in P7-8, with 14 wins and 17 ITMs in 27 starts. This week he had a more difficult time from those posts.

==============================================

For the week ending March 6, 2017

Miami Player Pages (for March 6, 2017). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

For the 4th consecutive week, Aritz either led or tied for the lead for most wins. This week he led with 15 wins, the 3rd consecutive week he has led with 15. Jabi was 2nd with 9. Aritz led the in the money finishes with 25. Jabi was 2nd with 22. Where should we begin with the superlatives? Perhaps the most amazing thing about his game by game performance this week is his line for Mar. 3. The line that said "Did Not Play". Aritz had a heavy schedule that day, 8 games. He missed them all. So he achieved 15 wins (.517 winning percentage) and 25 ITMs (.862) in 29 games. One wonders what his week's output would have been had he played the extra 8 games. Perhaps not as good? Perhaps the missed performance refreshed him.

He came back the next day with 2 wins, and followed that with a day for the ages on Mar. 5. 7 games--6 wins and a place. As of the release of this post (through Mar. 8) he has won at least 1 game in 24 consecutive performances, starting February 8. You can see this by scrolling down to the week ending February 13 and following the game by game charts for each of the last 4 weeks. Perhaps even more amazingly, since Feb. 17 he has had multiple wins in 16 consecutive performances. In the 4th game of the Mar. 8 performance, he was out of the money. It broke a string of 18 consecutive games in the money going back to Mar. 4

In his first two 15 win weeks, his wins more than doubled his other ITMs. (7 and 4). This week his 15 wins were accompanied by 10 other ITMs. This week his winning percentage for the season improved from .325 to .343 and his ITMs from  .600 to .625. At the end of the week he had built a 39 win lead over Cisneros, his closest rival. Right now it might be fair to say that he is playing in a league of his own. If Aritz was a baseball hitter his line for the week would look like this.

Games-W-P-S

7-3-1-1
5-2-2-0
Did Not Play
5-2-1-1
7-6-1-0
5-2-1-2

Suffice it to say that post positions are irrelevant when looking at Aritz' record these days.

P4-5:  7-3-3-1-0

P6:     3  0-0-0-3

He won with 7 partners. 3 of Guisasola's 5 wins, 2 of Chauderon's 3 wins, and  2 of Carlos' 4 wins came with Aritz.

For the week ending February 27, 2017

Miami Player Pages (for February 27, 2017). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

For the 3rd consecutive week, Aritz either led or tied for the lead for most wins. He duplicated last week's total of 15. Cisneros was 2nd with 8. 13 players had 5 wins or more, but the yawning canyon between Aritz and the rest of the roster was amazing. For the season, as of Feb. 27, Aritz winning percentage was .325. Cisneros, the active player with the 2nd highest winning percentage on the roster, was .219. What more can be said about Aritz' play so far this season? Oh yes, as of the date of this post (March 3) he is working on a  consecutive performance streak with at least 1 win that has reached 20 (Feburary 8-March 2). This is in addition to a 14 performance streak with at least 1 win that ran from January 11-26. Aritz tied with Zinkunegi for the in the money lead with 19. Four players had 18. Aritz won multiple games in every performance this week. If he was a baseball batter his line would look like this:

For the week ending February 20, 2017

Miami Player Pages (for February 20, 2017). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

Aritz had a monster week, winning 15 games, the second most in a week this season, behind Cisneros' 16 for the week ending January 9. Ricky was 2nd with 10. 12 players had 5 wins or more. Ricky and Jabi led the in the money finishes with 23. Aritz had 22. Aritz won at least 1 game in every performance. As of the release of this post (Feb. 23, 2017) he has won at least 1 game in 14 consecutive performances. For the week he won multiple times in every performance but one. He didn't go more than 2 consecutive games without an ITM. His week was highlighted by his Feb. 17 results, 8 games, 4 wins, 6 ITMs. The 4 wins came in consecutive games (7,8,10,11) and he had 5 consecutive ITMs. On Feb. 19, all of his 6 starts were from Post 7 or 8. He won 2. If Aritz was a baseball hitter his line would look like this.

For the week ending February 13, 2017

Miami Player Pages (for February 13, 2017). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

Aritz and Aizpitarte led Miami winners with 11. Zinkunegi was 3rd with 10. Zinkunegi and Benat led the in the money finishes with 24.  It was Zinkunegi's second consecutive lead in ITMs. He also led with 24 last week. Aritz was 3rd with 22. 6 players had 20 or more ITMs. We will follow Aritz' week because he had a higher winning percentage than Aizpitarte. Aritz had wins and non-win ITMs in every performance. He had two dominating performances (Feb. 8 and 12) in which he won three times and was 5-7 total ITMs. He was better than .500 ITM percentage in 5 performances. Interestingly, he had no wins and only 1 ITM in his singles matches for the week. If Aritz was a baseball hitter his line would be:

Games-W-P-S

7-3-2-0
5-1-2-0
6-1-1-2
5-2-1-0
7-3-1-1
5-1-1-0

35-11-8-3

As far as post position is concerned, I'm not sure that the top coding I do is the most illustrative top coding. Mainly, I don't know if the top coding would better:

1-3; 4-6; 7-8, or 1-3; 4-5; 6-8.

So what I'll do from now on is set up a top code in this fashion. 1-3; 4-5; 6; 7-8. Then you can take your pick as to where Post 6 might be better placed. Either way, Aritz can and does win from any post position.

For the week ending January 30, 2017

Miami Player Pages (for January 30, 2017). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

Aritz led Miami winners for the 3rd week in a row with 10. 6 players had 7. Aritz also had the most in the money finishes with 25, a very healthy .694 percentage. Benat was 2nd with 19. Aritz' 14 performance streak with at least 1 win came to an end on  January 27, when he was in the money  4 times in 7 games. He then started a new streak, which had reached 5 performances (through February 2, as this was posted). He started the week very slowly, with only 2 wins in his first 3 performances (19 games). Even so, he had 13 ITMs in those performances. After his winning streak was broken, he finished impressively, with 8 wins and 12 ITMs) in 17 games.

If Aritz was a baseball batter, his line would look like this:

Games-W-P-S

5-1-3-0
7-0-2-2
5-3-1-0

His posts were unevenly distributed but his wins were very evenly distributed. He failed to fully cash in with wins on his advantageous post opportunities, but was still devastating in terms of ITMs. He also had a .286 winning percentage and .571 ITM percentage from P7-8.

Aritz again dominated the week with 12 wins. Ricky and Ladutxe were 2nd with 9. Ladutxe and Zinkunegi had the most in the money finishes with 19. Aritz, Ricky, and Manuel tied for 2nd with 17. Again, Aritz won at least once in every performance, running this streak to 12. His biggest day was January 19, when he had 4 wins and 1 place in 7 games. It was a bittersweet week at Miami. Eric Irastorza left Miami Jai Alai after an 18 year career. He won his last game, the last game of the January 15 performance. He had 2 wins, a place and a show in five games on that day. For the week, Aritz led all winners with 10 wins. Alexandro was 2nd with 9. Aizpitarte led the in the money finishes with 20. Irastorza was 2nd with 18, a magnificent .700 percentage. Irastorza finished his season with a line that read

Cisneros blew the rest of the roster out of the water this week with 16 wins. Tico was 2nd with 9. Cisneros also led the in the money finishes with 22. Tico was 2nd with 18. Cisneros began the week with 6 wins in 8 games on Wednesday. He had multiple wins in 4 of the 6 performances for the week. He was in the money every performance. He was 12 out of 15 ITM the first three performances. He had streaks of 4 and 5 wins in a row in those performances. Also during those performances he won or placed 10 times in a row.  He had unbalanced opportunities (P1-3=18 games, P4-6=7 games; P7-8=8 games. For those who might say "aha!", I would answer "You can only play the hand you are dealt." Cisneros played it magnificently.

Aritz picked up right where he left off, even though a little less than half his victories this week came during last season. He dominated the roster with 13 wins. Zinkunegi was 2nd with 7. Aritz also dominated the in the money leaders with 23, 7 more than Zinkunegi, Cisneros, and Aizpitarte. He won in every performance. He was in the money beyond his wins in every performance. He won from every post but  5 and 8 (1-2; 2-1; 3-3; 4-3; 6-1; 7-3--he didn't have a single P8). He won with 8 partners. Three of those partners got their only wins of the week with him. The most amazing thing about the week was how Aritz ended it. Going into his last performance (Jan. 2) he had a solid week, with 8 wins, 3 places, 6 shows, good enough to win many weeks. In the last performance he was phenomenal. 6 starts, 5 wins and a place. He saw his 2 P1s and 1P3 like a baseball hitter sees hanging curves. He is lights out in early post positions. In 11 P1-3 positions he was 6-0-3.

Here is Aritz' week.

Aritz came back after a 3 week hiatus and tied for the weekly winner lead with Bereikua. Each had 9 wins, but Aritz compiled his in 10 less games. Bereikua had the most in the money finishes with 22. It was a short but busy week for Aritz, as he did not play on Dec. 15 or 16. The four performances he that he did play he was very busy: 8,6,7, and 7 games. He started and finished strong, winning 3 games in his first performance and 4 games in his last. He won from posts 2-6 and 8. He was in the money 9 of his last 12 games.  He won with 6 partners.

Going into the last 10 performances of the season he had a good chance at the triple crown (most wins, most championship singles and doubles wins). He had a 49 game lead over 2nd place Irastorza in the wins race. He led Cisneros by 8 games in championship singles. He led Jabi by 3 wins in championship doubles.

Miami Player Pages (for December 12, 2016). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

For the third week in a row, Irastorza was the leading weekly winner with 10. Angel was 2nd with 9. Tico was the weekly in the money leader with 21. Aritz again did not play (he returned on December 16). In 31 games Irastorza finished 1st or 2nd 20 times. He won in every post position except P5 and P7. He won with 4 partners who had 3 or less wins for the entire week. He won with 8 partners.

While he has little chance to win the most games this season, Irastorza's 3 week winning streak has moved him from 3rd place in total wins (121 to 127 for Cisneros), to 2nd (144 to 139 for Cisneros). He now trails Aritz by 47, picking up 33 games during Aritz' absence.

For the week ending December 5, 2016

Miami Player Pages (for December 5, 2016). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

For the second week in a row, Irastorza had the most wins, this time with 13. Since the week ending July 11, only Aritz has had more wins to lead a week (14 for the week ending August 15, and 16 the week ending September 5). Irastorza dominated the week. Aitzol came in second, a distant 5 wins behind. Irastorza also led in the money finishes with a magnificent 23 in 31 opportunities. His win and ITM percentages were stratospheric, .419 and .742 respectively. He began the week with a November 30 performance that netted 5 wins in 6 games. Three of those wins were from P7. He was out of the money twice in a performance twice. He had no out of the money streaks.  He was in the money 6 times and won 4 from Post 7-8. He won with 6 partners. He won with Luis 4 times and Tevin 3. Oddly, in the one performance he was in the money every game, he didn't win any. It was an awesome performance. Aritz, who is the leading winner this season, did not play this week.

Here is Irastorza's week:

Bereikua and Irastorza had the most wins this week with 9. Since Bereikua had a higher winning percentage, we will follow his week.  The 9 wins tied for the least wins in a full week so far this season. Benat and Ladutxe had 9 on July 25, 2016 (see below). Cisneros had the most in the money finishes with 20. Bereikua's  week began by missing the November 2 performance. After that he had 6 wins in 8 Post 1 opportunities. He had 10 of 13 ITMs and 7 of 9 wins in 15 Post 1-3 opportunities, remarkable efficiency from those post numbers. (added Nov. 12, 2016) He won with 6 partners. Last week's winner, Cisneros (and Ladutxe), tied for 2nd in wins with 7. 8 players had 0 or 1 wins.

Miami Player Pages (for October 17, 2016). See page two for cumulative season player records and basic player information.

Aritz easily won the most games again this week, with 11. Arrasate and Ricky were second with 8. Aritz had the most "in the money" finishes with 19, 1 more than Aitzol. Aritz also improved his streak of finishing 1st or 2nd in wins to 12 weeks going back to August 1. He won with 10 different partners. He was half of four different partners' total wins for the week. The majority of his games were early games, but several other top players on the roster also played many early games. Here is Aritz' week.

For the week ending September 5, 2016. Aritz had a fantastic week. He won more than twice as often as anyone else on the roster, a rarity in quinella play. His .667 in the money percentage was stratospheric. His win percentage for the season is .302, also stratospheric. Aritz is a front court player who usually plays in the late games, meaning he faces the toughest competition. See the article on his week here

Statistical data for the completed 2016 Winter-Spring season is available in the statistical report of June 30, 2016 (see page 2).  Eric Irastorza won the Winter season triple crown, most wins all games (205), championship singles (16), and championship doubles (32). He also came in 1st-4th in team wins all games and led "in the money" (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place finishes) with a .564 percentage, .46 percentage points better than second place Cisneros. His wins percentage of .253 was one of only two on the roster over .200 and led second place Cisneros by .51 percentage points. Irastorza played 810 games, Cisneros 579. Jabi led all players in games played with 874. Irastorza was 7th in that category. (Thanks very much to Tiger for pointing me to the correct statistics sheet so that I could change all the errors this paragraph contained.)
